Yoga for children
Ton Yoga began offering yoga for children after completing two levels of PedaYoga. After completing her 200-hour yoga teacher training for adults, Marianne worked as a program officer and yoga facilitator for Zen noon hours at the Gatineau Social Paediatrics Centre. After teaching more than 90 yoga classes for children and facilitating dance and movement extracurricular activities, this is what she has to say:
If you think yoga for children is always calm, don’t be fooled! Children need to move and the best thing a teacher can do is adapt to their energy – which changes and varies according to the day, season, etc. Using their imagination, children learn to do “the swimming crocodile”, pretend to be a dog or a cloud floating through the sky and become aware of their body in space, their emotions and the emotions of others…
Age groups
4 to 7 and 8 to 12 years
Number of children per group
Ideally 8 to 10
Example of a sequence:
Phase 1 - The soup is too hot, we blow on it: little bowl, medium bowl, big bowl… (inspired by Boucle d’or)
Then we transform the wolf in three breaths: from wolf to frog, from frog to butterfly… He becomes tired from the transformation, goes to bed and while he sleeps, he climbs onto a cloud, floats up towards the sky and watches the world beneath him…
